Community Integration

Community integration is about immersed interaction with the rural community. Through integration activities, students express that they gain a sense of community and belonging while on placement despite being away from home. Students from rural and urban origins report that their placement experiences extend beyond their clinical work. Various interactions, including social and professional aspects, allow them to experience rural lifestyles and cultures.

  • Taking part in social events within the community
  • Travelling to outlying communities with healthcare practitioners
  • Learning about and interacting with Indigenous culture and health services
  • Meeting community leaders
  • Visiting the local elementary or high school and profiling healthcare careers to youth
  • Spending a night on call with emergency staff
  • Identify some basic facts about the community you will be placed in, the health services they offer, geography, and cultural history prior to arriving in the community.
